# How to dispose of a refrigerator
A refrigerator is not bulky furniture. It contains **refrigerant** that must not be vented, plus foam and metal that cities route through appliance programs. Treating a fridge like a sofa is how pickups fail and Freon rules get violated.

Many utilities pay you or haul free when they retire an old fridge. Ask about proof photos, working-condition rules, and whether window ACs qualify too.

Special loads, Freon appointments, or metal-recycling bulk days appear in many metros. Book through the channel on your city dispose page — not a generic bulky furniture form if Freon is split out.
Retailer haul-away
Buying a replacement sometimes includes haul-away. Confirm stairs, hookups, and whether the old unit must work.

Some sites accept Freon appliances only with recovery certification. Gate staff will ask. Bring help — fridges are heavy and awkward.
HHW is usually wrong
Paint-and-battery HHW buildings typically **reject** refrigerators. Start with appliance programs unless your city guide explicitly says HHW.
