# Specialty and rechargeable battery disposal

Some Search Console queries are oddly specific (for example model-like “DDR battery disposal”). Most of the time that still means: **this is not an alkaline AA**, retail drop boxes may refuse it, and you need HHW or a specialty rechargeable program. Brand, model, or “DDR” strings on the label rarely change the disposal rule — chemistry and form factor do.

Sort the chemistry

• **Alkaline household** — rules vary; many cities allow trash, some want HHW — household batteries
• **Lithium-ion** (phones, tools, scooters, laptop packs) — never trash — lithium guide
• **Lead-acid auto** — retailer core exchange — car battery guide
• **NiMH / NiCd tool and camera packs** — usually HHW or brand take-back, not blue bin
• **Button / coin cells** — HHW or retail button-cell programs; tape both sides

If you cannot read the chemistry on the pack, treat it as HHW and bring a photo of the label.

Prep before you leave home

• Tape exposed terminals with clear packing tape
• Keep packs dry and out of a hot car
• Bag swollen, leaking, or recalled cells separately and tell staff at the gate
• Do not toss packs into a mixed e-waste box unless the site says batteries are OK in that stream

When the store bin rejects you

Retail battery buckets often accept only certain sizes (AA/AAA/9V) and refuse tool packs, scooter batteries, and anything damaged. Take rejected packs to:

• City or county HHW
• Brand / tool-manufacturer pack recycling
• E-waste events that explicitly list batteries

Ask which stream they want — some sites separate lithium from lead-acid and alkalines.

Damaged or recalled packs

Do not charge them. Keep them cool and isolated in a non-flammable container and follow HHW guidance for damaged lithium. Smoking, sparking, or hot packs are an emergency-response issue, not a recycling errand — get people and pets away and call local emergency guidance if the pack is actively failing.
