Bulky pickup in Washington
Mattresses, furniture, and many appliances — city bulk or drop-off, not the regular cart.
Official source:
District residents schedule mattress via DC 311 / DPW bulk trash (max 7 items; mattresses/box springs wrapped in plastic). Self-haul: Fort Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John McCormack Rd NE. Keep HHW and e-waste off bulk piles.
Household hazardous waste — used oil, paint, propane, batteries, and chemicals.
Official source:
Take motor oil to DC DPW Special Waste Collection Events — no permanent daily HHW depot. Register in advance; bring District residency proof. Keep chemicals off bulk piles.
TVs, computers, and electronics. Usually banned from trash and the blue bin.
Official source:
DC electronics including e waste mixed go to DPW Special Waste Collection Events only — free registration required. Not accepted at Fort Totten. Wipe data before drop-off.
Cart recycling, store film take-back, and foam rules — not a second bulky program.
Official source:
Washington recycling carts do not want expanded polystyrene (EPS). White block foam, packing peanuts, and food trays are different streams. Grocery film/bag bins are not a foam drop-off. DC DPW — Bulk Collections is the official Washington program we verified — if that page only mentions plastic bags or film, treat block foam and food trays as bagged garbage unless it names a foam densifier. Clean peanuts may be reused at a shipper; starch peanuts are not EPS.
