# How to dispose of a hard drive (and wipe data first)
“Hard drive disposal” is really two jobs: **make the data unreadable**, then **recycle the hardware** as e-waste. Skipping the first step is how old tax returns and photo libraries leave the house still readable.
Step 1: Decide how dead the data needs to be
Pick a level that matches your risk:
- **Factory / OS wipe** — fine for low-sensitivity home drives that still mount
- **Full-disk encrypt then wipe** — stronger when the drive still works
- **Remove and physically destroy** — platters drilled/shredded, or SSD physically destroyed, when policy or high sensitivity requires it
- **Certified destruction** — businesses and clinics use vendors with certificates of destruction
SSDs do not behave like spinning disks — a quick format is not enough. Prefer encrypt+wipe tools meant for SSDs, or physical destruction.
External USB drives and old DVR/NVR disks count too. Pull them before you recycle the chassis.
Step 2: Recycle the drive as e-waste
Once data risk is handled:
- Municipal **e-waste** drop-off or events
- Retailer electronics take-back (policies vary for bare drives)
- Certified e-waste recyclers for bulk lots

If the PC still runs, wiping the drive in place and recycling the desktop or laptop is often simpler. If you need to keep the machine, remove only the drive and recycle that piece.
What not to do
- Toss an unencrypted drive in a dumpster
- Microwave or “burn” a drive indoors
- Donate a PC with a live drive and no wipe
- Ship damaged lithium UPS batteries with the PC — separate lithium rules
