Berkeley property owners of 1–4 unit buildings get one free bulky waste pickup per calendar year for mattress — up to 3 cubic yards, with each additional cubic yard charged at a published $46.06. Call 510-981-7270 to book a Wednesday pickup, or self-haul to the Transfer Station at 1201 Second Street where mattress and box spring drop-off is $18 per unit (first two free for California residents).

The Berkeley Transfer Station accepts no hazardous materials and most universal waste, so take motor oil to the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste facility at 2100 East 7th Street in Oakland (800-606-6606), which is free for county residents. Propane tanks are one exception handled at the Transfer Station for a published $35.00 each.

Berkeley accepts construction and demolition material for recycling at the Transfer Station, but it must be loose rather than bagged. Clean wood, roofing, drywall, tile, brick, dirt, concrete, metal, and fixtures are all accepted with tipping and environmental compliance fees. Route paint to Alameda County HHW.
