San José owners and renters (including multifamily — check property manager for setout spot) can schedule free Junk Pickup via 311.SanJoseCA.gov, the 311 app, 3-1-1, or (408) 535-3500. Requests may include up to 12 acceptable items (mattresses, furniture, tires, and more). Appointments are on your regular recycling/garbage day; set items out up to 24 hours before the appointment (improper early setout can be cited as illegal dumping).
Household hazardous waste — used oil, paint, propane, batteries, and chemicals.

Do not trash HHW in San José. Use Santa Clara County’s free HHW program (paint, batteries, electronics, fluorescents, garden chemicals, cleaners, etc.) with a required appointment — (408) 299-7300 or the county HHW appointment system. Permanent San Jose / San Martin days are typically Thursday–Saturday; confirm the operating schedule when you book.

San Jose recycling carts do not want expanded polystyrene (EPS). White block foam, packing peanuts, and food trays are different streams. Grocery film/bag bins are not a foam drop-off. City of San José — Junk Pickup is the official San Jose program we verified — if that page only mentions plastic bags or film, treat block foam and food trays as bagged garbage unless it names a foam densifier. Clean peanuts may be reused at a shipper; starch peanuts are not EPS.
