# HHW vs bulk vs e-waste — which channel do you need?
Municipal websites often split the same household mess across three programs. Mixing them up is the most common reason a trip fails.
Bulky / large-item / heavy trash
**For:** mattresses, sofas, carpets, non-Freon appliances (in many cities), yard debris piles.
**Not usually for:** wet paint, pesticides, automotive fluids, loose trash bags, construction debris from contractors.
Start here: Materials · Bulky and city hubs such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Houston.
Household hazardous waste (HHW)
**For:** oil-based paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, gasoline, antifreeze, many batteries, propane cylinders (rules vary), used motor oil.
**Often not for:** latex paint (many cities say dry it out for trash), Freon appliances, large TVs, tires, business waste.
Find sites: Centers filtered by material, the HHW section of a city dispose page, or the county HHW hubs for suburban programs.
E-waste / electronics
**For:** TVs, monitors, computers, printers, phones. Some cities fold small electronics into HHW; others ban TVs at HHW and send you to a CyberCycle-style center or special event.
**Watch for:** size limits (e.g. TVs under 27 inches), appointment rules, and data wiping before drop-off.

Quick decision order
1. Is it wet chemistry or fuel? → **HHW** 2. Is it a screen or computer? → **E-waste** (confirm if HHW also takes it) 3. Is it Freon (fridge/AC)? → city Freon rule — often **not** plain bulk and **not** HHW 4. Otherwise oversized household goods → **Bulk**
